Air Fryer Blooming Onion

Recipe author:
Serves: 2 people
Prep time: 5 minutes
Cooking time: 18-20

Ingredients:

  • 1 large brown onion
  • 1 cup plain flour
  • 1.5 tsp Murray River Salt
  • 1 tsp chilli flakes
  • 1 tsp smoked paprika
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • 2 whole eggs
  • Kewpie mayonnaise (for dipping)
  • 2 tsp hot sauce (for dipping)

Method:

  1. Place the onion root-side down. Carefully cut from the centre outwards into 8 wedges, keeping the core intact so the onion holds together. Gently separate the layers to create the “bloom.”
  2. In a bowl, combine flour, Murray River Salt, chilli flakes, smoked paprika, garlic powder and onion powder. In a separate bowl, whisk the eggs.
  3. Dust the onion well with the seasoned flour. Dip generously into the egg wash, then coat heavily with the remaining flour mix, making sure it gets right into all the layers.
  4. Carefully place the coated onion in the air fryer basket. Cook at 200°C for 18–20 minutes, or until golden brown and crispy.
  5. While the onion cooks, mix together kewpie mayonnaise and hot sauce until smooth.
  6. Transfer the blooming onion to a plate and serve immediately with the spicy dipping sauce.
